Sewing 101 is a fun, relaxed, and confidence-building introduction to machine sewing designed especially for absolute beginners. Whether you’ve just unboxed your first sewing machine or you’ve had one sitting in a closet for years, this class will help you understand how your machine works and how to use it with ease. In just two hours, you’ll learn the essential skills that form the foundation of all future sewing projects. We’ll begin by getting comfortable with the machine itself, exploring the basic parts, learning how to wind a bobbin, thread the machine, adjust settings, and understand how stitches are formed. You’ll practice hands-on exercises designed to help you sew straight lines, smooth curves, and clean corners so you can build coordination and confidence at your own pace. This workshop focuses on learning and practicing core skills rather than completing a full project, which allows you to explore the fundamentals without feeling rushed. You’ll also get a friendly introduction to sewing pattern basics, including how to interpret common symbols, what seam allowances mean, how grainline affects fabric layout, and how to begin reading a simple pattern. In addition, you’ll learn the basics of different types of fabrics, how they behave, and what to look for when choosing materials for future projects so you can feel more confident shopping for and working with fabric on your own. All materials for practice are provided. You are encouraged to bring your own sewing machine but if needed you may rent one during class.
